The Polis team will create an interactive map-based application for the River Walk that provides increased navigation based on Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) beacons. The beacons create a network that allows users to have precise navigation even on a subterranean level.
Visitors can use the app to find their destination and receive targeted advertisements or alerts from local businesses. Our goal is to help the City of San Antonio, residents, tourists, and local businesses obtain the most seamless and dynamic experience the River Walk has to offer.
Current solutions, such as the GPS navigation apps from Google or Apple, have difficulty connecting to devices below street level and are effectively unusable. There is also a lack of physical addresses and visible signage along the River Walk. This means that thousands of visitors are relying on City and River Walk staff to help them find their destination and can lead to crowded sidewalks, frustrated visitors and staff, as well as loss of business.
